What is Jane Addams known for?
I am primarily known as a founder of the settlement house movement in the United States, most famously with Hull House in Chicago. My work there was driven by a belief in direct engagement with the community, sharing knowledge, and fostering social reform. We aimed to provide education, recreation, and social services to immigrants and the working poor, while also advocating for broader societal changes to address poverty and injustice. The settlement house served as a laboratory for sociological study and a hub for activism.
