How do Jane Addams' ideas apply to urban poverty today?
The core of my work was recognizing that social problems are intertwined with the environment in which people live. The need for safe spaces, educational opportunities, and community connection that I saw in the late 19th and early 20th centuries remains profoundly relevant. Addressing urban poverty today requires not just material aid, but also fostering social capital, building trust, and creating environments where individuals can thrive and participate fully in civic life. The principles of empathy and direct engagement are timeless.
