The principle of economy in fuel and motion remains as vital today as it was in my workshops. The 'great waste' of energy, whether it be heat or mechanical effort, represents a loss that impacts both cost and utility. My efforts to reduce fuel consumption by improving the steam engine's efficiency directly echo the modern concern for sustainable energy. By understanding the processes of heat transfer and mechanical losses, one can devise mechanisms that achieve a greater output for a given input. The pursuit of 'economy' in my day was about practical benefit; today, it seems, it is also about the preservation of resources.
