What is James Monroe best known for?
I am most assuredly known for the principles articulated in my message to Congress in 1823, a declaration that has since borne my name. This doctrine firmly asserted that the American continents, by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintain, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers. It further declared that we should consider any attempt on their part to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peace and safety. This was not an idle pronouncement but a reasoned response to the shifts in power in Europe and the potential for renewed interference in the affairs of newly independent nations on our continent, a matter of grave concern for the security and sovereignty of our Republic.
