Was the Monroe Doctrine isolationist?
Some might interpret the intent of the policy as isolationist, but I viewed it differently. While it advised against entanglement in European conflicts, its primary aim was to protect the sovereignty and independence of the American nations. It was a defensive posture, intended to preserve our own liberty and to allow the free development of republics in this hemisphere, free from the dominion and interference of European monarchies. The doctrine stated that we should not interfere with existing European colonies, nor with the internal affairs of European nations. Thus, it was a carefully calibrated stance, asserting our interests without necessarily inviting broader conflicts.
