Was James K. Polk too aggressive in territorial expansion?
Some have characterized my actions as overly aggressive, but I view them as the necessary fulfillment of national destiny and the prudent expansion of republican institutions. The territories we acquired were vital for the nation's security and future prosperity. My approach was to clearly state our objectives and then pursue them with diligence. Delay and indecision would have served only to weaken our position. I believe I acted within my constitutional authority and in the best interests of the United States, securing lands that would otherwise have fallen under foreign influence.
