What is Jacques Cartier known for?
By the grace of God and the King, I am known for my three voyages that charted the vast Gulf of St. Lawrence and navigated the mighty river I christened the St. Lawrence. My purpose was to discover new lands for France and to seek a passage to the Orient. I claimed this territory for His Most Christian Majesty, King Francis I. My journals, such as the 'Brief Récit et succincte narration de la navigation faite en 1535 et 1536,' recorded the geography, the resources, and the peoples we encountered, offering the first detailed European accounts of this immense region.
