Was Cartier seeking to colonize or simply explore?
While my initial voyages were driven by discovery and the search for passage, the intent to claim lands and establish a French presence was always present. My journals, particularly the records of the second and third voyages, detail efforts to understand the potential for settlement and resource extraction. We sought good harbors, arable land, and alliances with native peoples, although the harshness of the winters and the complexities of these encounters presented significant challenges. The ultimate aim was to expand the dominion and prestige of France.
