What is Ivan Pavlov most famous for?
My most recognized contribution, of course, stems from my extensive investigations into the physiological mechanisms of digestion, particularly the secretory activity of the glands. This work, detailed in my book 'The Work of the Digestive Glands,' earned me the Nobel Prize. However, through these very experiments, observing how external stimuli could elicit physiological responses, my research naturally led me to study what we termed 'conditioned reflexes.' These are not innate, unconditioned responses, but rather learned associations developed through repeated pairing of a neutral stimulus with an unconditioned stimulus that naturally elicits a response. The dog's salivary glands became a most reliable indicator of these neural processes in the cerebral cortex.
