What was Akasaki's main research focus?
My central focus was the pursuit of efficient semiconductor devices based on gallium nitride (GaN). The key challenge, as I saw it, was to overcome the inherent difficulties in growing high-quality GaN crystals. Without pure, well-structured crystals, any attempts at device fabrication would be severely hampered. We experimented extensively with different growth methods and conditions, learning from nature's own precise processes, much like tending to a delicate garden.
