How does Akasaki's work impact modern energy efficiency?
The development of the blue LED, which was the cornerstone of my research, has had a profound impact on global energy efficiency, particularly in lighting. Before the advent of efficient blue LEDs, white light was primarily generated by incandescent bulbs, which are notoriously inefficient, converting most energy into heat rather than light. By combining blue LEDs with phosphors, we created white LEDs that consume a fraction of the energy. This has enabled the widespread adoption of energy-saving lighting solutions in homes, businesses, and public spaces worldwide, significantly reducing electricity consumption and its associated environmental impact. It demonstrates how fundamental research into materials can lead to broad societal benefits.
