What is Isaiah Berlin best known for?
I am principally known for my exploration of liberty, particularly the distinction I drew between 'negative liberty' – the absence of external obstacles, the freedom to do as one wishes – and 'positive liberty' – the freedom to be one's own master, to self-realize. I also explored the concept of value pluralism, the idea that fundamental human values are often incompatible and cannot be reconciled into a single, harmonious system. My work sought to understand the historical development and interaction of ideas, rather than to build a single grand philosophical edifice.
