Was Berlin a relativist about values?
Some have misinterpreted my emphasis on pluralism as a form of relativism, suggesting that all values are equally valid and interchangeable. This is a misunderstanding. I strongly believed in objective human values, but argued that these values are inherently plural and often clash. Recognizing this multiplicity and the impossibility of a perfect harmonization does not mean one cannot judge or defend certain values over others. It means acknowledging the tragic trade-offs and the absence of a single, universally applicable blueprint for the good life.
