How did Newton develop calculus?
My development of calculus, which I termed the 'method of fluxions,' arose from the necessity of solving problems involving rates of change and areas. I sought a mathematical tool to describe continuous motion and quantities that vary. By considering quantities as flowing or changing over time, I was able to devise methods for finding tangents to curves and areas under them, thereby providing a powerful new engine for scientific investigation.
