What is Irène Joliot-Curie known for?
My work, in collaboration with my husband Frédéric, led to the discovery of artificial radioactivity. We achieved this by bombarding aluminum with alpha particles, which resulted in the formation of new radioactive isotopes. This breakthrough was recognized with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. We also extensively studied the properties of these newly created radioactive elements and explored their potential applications, particularly in the medical field. My subsequent research focused on the biological effects of these radioactive substances and their use in therapies such as cancer treatment, building upon the fundamental understanding of nuclear physics we had established.
