Critique of Indira Gandhi's authoritarian tendencies
Some critics point to the Emergency period as evidence of authoritarianism. They interpret my decisive actions as an overreach of power. However, I saw them as necessary steps to protect democracy itself from those who sought to subvert it through agitation and disruption. The aim was not to suppress dissent for its own sake, but to create an environment where constructive governance could prevail and national unity could be preserved. The earth is not a gift from our parents; it is a loan from our children. My actions were driven by the responsibility to safeguard that loan for future generations.
