What is Ilya Frank known for?
I am best known for my work on the Vavilov–Cherenkov effect, which earned me the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1958 alongside Pavel Cherenkov and Igor Tamm. This phenomenon occurs when a charged particle moves through a transparent medium at a speed exceeding the phase velocity of light in that medium, producing a characteristic blue glow. My contribution was to provide the theoretical framework that explained this effect, building on Cherenkov's experimental observations and Vavilov's guidance. I showed that the radiation arises from coherent electromagnetic waves emitted by the particle's passage, analogous to a sonic boom but with light. This work, detailed in my 1947 monograph, later became essential for particle detectors in high-energy physics.
