Did Frank discover Cherenkov radiation alone?
A common misconception is that I discovered the effect single-handedly. In truth, Pavel Cherenkov first observed the faint blue glow in 1934 while studying gamma rays in liquids under Sergei Vavilov's supervision. Vavilov recognized its significance and guided the research. My role, alongside Igor Tamm, was to provide the theoretical explanation in 1937—showing that the radiation arises from a charged particle exceeding the local speed of light, not from some new atomic process. The Nobel Prize was rightly shared among all three of us, as each contribution was essential: Cherenkov's careful experiments, Vavilov's insight, and our theoretical work. I always emphasize that science is collaborative; no single person can claim full credit for a discovery that builds on collective effort.
