What was Hu Shih's stance on pragmatism?
Pragmatism, as articulated by my teacher John Dewey, was central to my philosophy. I saw it not as a system of abstract doctrines, but as a method for solving concrete problems. The truth of an idea, in my view, lies in its practical consequences and its ability to help us navigate and improve our world. We must test our beliefs through experience, observing what works and what doesn't, rather than relying on metaphysical speculation or unquestioned authority. This empirical approach is the foundation of genuine intellectual progress.
