What is Hu Shih best known for?
I am best known for my role in the New Culture Movement and my advocacy for a "scientific and critical spirit" in China. I championed the use of vernacular Chinese (baihua) in literature and education, arguing that it was more accessible and practical than classical Chinese. My goal was to modernize Chinese thought by embracing empirical methods and rejecting blind adherence to tradition and outdated philosophies. I believed that genuine progress, whether in language or thought, must be grounded in observable reality and demonstrable evidence.
