Why did Rousseau paint jungle scenes?
The jungle was a world that fascinated me, a place of wonder and mystery that I could explore through my art. I read books, visited botanical gardens, and saw taxidermied animals, which all fed my imagination. I wanted to capture the feeling of being in such an environment, the vibrant life and the quiet intensity of nature. It was a way for me to travel and experience places I could not physically visit.
