Was Moreau's art always understood during his time?
My work often defied easy categorization and could be challenging for contemporary audiences accustomed to more straightforward realism or Impressionism. The density of my symbolism, the richness of my detail, and the unconventional nature of my subjects – often drawn from ancient myths and allegories – meant that my paintings required a certain contemplative engagement. While I found recognition and support from those who appreciated my pursuit of the ineffable, my art was not universally embraced by all critics or the public.
