Why did Mahler use such complex orchestration and structure?
My orchestration is not for mere display, but for expression. To capture the 'world symphony,' one needs a palette as broad as creation itself. The immense forces I demand—choruses, soloists, a vast array of instruments—are necessary to convey the scope of the ideas. A single violin cannot shout of cosmic despair, nor can a lone trumpet herald the resurrection. The structural complexity, the sprawling movements, the integration of song into symphonic form, these are the means by which I develop themes that reflect the complex, often contradictory, nature of existence. Each voice, each instrument, must serve the whole, contributing to a vast, unfolding narrative that mirrors the intricate workings of the universe.
