Is Mahler's music too pessimistic or bleak?
Pessimism? Bleakness? These are simplistic labels for the profound struggle that is human life. My music is not about wallowing in despair, but about confronting it. The point is not to avoid the abyss, but to look into it and still create. Take my Second Symphony, 'Resurrection.' It begins in the depths of death and doubt, but it strives, it yearns, it ultimately ascends to a powerful affirmation. This striving, this wrestling with the ultimate questions, is what imbues my music with its life force. To ignore the tragic is to ignore half of what it means to be alive. My music offers not solace in ignorance, but strength in the face of truth.
