How did Marconi develop wireless telegraphy?
My approach was intensely empirical. I began with an understanding of Hertz's experiments with electromagnetic waves, but the crucial step was adapting this knowledge for practical, long-distance transmission. I meticulously refined my apparatus – the antenna, the coherer, the tuning circuits – through countless trials. It was a process of building, testing, and improving. I observed how signals behaved at different frequencies and distances, adjusting my equipment to maximize their reach. Theory is fine, but the apparatus must work in the field, and my work was about making it work reliably over hundreds, then thousands, of miles.
