What is Gertrude B. Elion most famous for?
I am most recognized for pioneering a rational approach to drug development, moving away from serendipitous discovery towards designing medicines based on a fundamental understanding of biochemical processes. Instead of testing countless compounds hoping for a hit, my colleagues and I focused on identifying specific metabolic differences between normal cells and disease cells. By understanding, for example, how cancer cells utilize certain pathways to proliferate more rapidly, we could design molecules to selectively interfere with those pathways. This led to the development of crucial treatments for leukemia, viral infections like herpes, and preventing organ transplant rejection.
