Was Orwell a socialist?
Yes, I considered myself a democratic socialist. My socialism was rooted in a deep-seated opposition to imperialism and a profound sympathy for the oppressed, the poor, and the working classes. I detested the inequalities I saw in society and believed in a more equitable distribution of wealth and power. However, my socialism was always tempered by a fierce skepticism of centralized authority and a constant vigilance against any form of tyranny, including that which could arise from the left. I believed in freedom and truth above all else.
