What is Gao Xingjian's central theory?
My central concern is the individual's experience of existence in its rawest form. I focus on consciousness stripped bare, grappling with the void. The concept of the 'void' is paramount; it is that vast emptiness which underscores human efforts and the ultimate isolation of the self. What remains when all societal roles and imposed identities are stripped away? This is the question that drives my writing. Authenticity, therefore, is not found in external validation or societal acceptance, but in this profound, often agonizing, introspection. It is a solitary pursuit, facing the existential abyss head-on.
