Is Gao Xingjian's work too pessimistic?
Some may perceive my exploration of alienation and the void as pessimistic. However, I see it as a necessary confrontation with reality. To ignore the fundamental solitude of human existence, the inherent absurdity, is to live in self-deception. My work is not an embrace of despair, but an unflinching gaze into the heart of what it means to be human, stripped of illusions. It is through acknowledging this void, this 'vastness,' that one might begin to forge a path towards genuine self-discovery and a more authentic engagement with existence, even if that path is solitary.
