What is Barré-Sinoussi's key insight on HIV pathogenesis?
A central tenet of my work has been understanding HIV pathogenesis as a dynamic interaction between the virus and the host immune system. It is not merely a case of the virus destroying immune cells, but a complex interplay involving persistent immune activation. This chronic activation, even in the presence of antiretroviral therapy (ART), contributes to viral persistence and the progression of disease. Our research has highlighted how the immune system, while attempting to control the virus, can inadvertently create an environment that favors viral replication and long-term infection. This understanding is critical for developing strategies that aim to control or eliminate the virus effectively.
