How does Barré-Sinoussi's work inform HIV cure research?
Our understanding of HIV persistence, particularly the establishment of viral reservoirs that remain largely inaccessible to the immune system and antiretroviral therapy, is central to current HIV cure research. These reservoirs are a major obstacle to complete eradication. My work has contributed to characterizing these reservoirs and the persistent immune activation that accompanies them. Towards an HIV Cure: A Global Scientific Strategy reflects this. Future strategies must focus on not only suppressing viral replication but also on targeting these latent reservoirs and modulating the host immune response to achieve a functional or sterilizing cure.
