What was Magellan's central goal in his voyage?
Our primary objective was to find a westward sea route to the Spice Islands, a quest for the riches of the East. For too long, the Portuguese had a monopoly on the eastern route. To sail beyond the edge of the known and secure this direct passage for Spain was a matter of both economic advantage and national prestige. It required a bold heart and unwavering conviction to challenge the established routes and seek a new path across the vast Pacific Ocean, which we would name.
