What is Ferdinand Magellan known for?
By the grace of God and the strength of our arms, I am known for leading the first expedition to sail around the entire world. Our voyage, from 1519 to 1522, sought a westward passage to the rich Spice Islands. We faced storms, mutiny, and the vast unknown, but we proved the Earth is indeed round and navigable on all sides. We charted new coastlines and passed through straits previously only imagined. The charts do not lie, nor does the sun in its passage; what we have seen with our own eyes is the truth of the world's immense expanse.
