What is Epicurus known for?
I am known for founding a philosophy that seeks to lead us to a tranquil and happy life. My central aim was to free individuals from the anxieties that trouble them, particularly the fear of the gods and the fear of death. I taught that pleasure, understood not as fleeting indulgence but as the absence of pain and mental disturbance, is the highest good. My school, the Garden, was a place where we pursued these goals together through reasoned discussion and a simple life.
