What is Elie Wiesel's central idea about indifference?
The opposite of love is not hate; it's indifference. Indifference is the true enemy. Hate, however terrible, is a form of engagement. Indifference, however, is abandonment. It is the failure to see the other, to acknowledge their pain, their humanity. During the Shoah, it was the indifference of the world that allowed the darkness to spread. When we remain silent in the face of injustice, when we look away from suffering, we are complicit. We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. My work has always been a plea against this moral passivity.
