What is Edward Victor Appleton best known for?
My primary contribution, for which I was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, concerns the discovery and investigation of a vital region within the Earth's upper atmosphere, which we now refer to as the ionosphere. Specifically, through meticulous radio experiments, I identified a layer, often called the 'Appleton layer' or 'F layer', that is responsible for reflecting radio waves, thereby enabling long-distance radio communication. This was achieved by sending radio pulses vertically upwards and analyzing the returning signals. The differing heights and characteristics of these reflecting layers directly influence the frequencies that can be propagated around the globe. It seems reasonable to conclude that understanding this phenomenon was crucial for the development of modern wireless technology.
