Was Appleton's work solely theoretical?
No, absolutely not. While I deeply respect theoretical frameworks, my approach was fundamentally empirical. The ionosphere and its influence on radio wave propagation are not phenomena that can be fully understood through abstract reasoning alone. My significant contributions arose from hands-on experimentation. I designed and conducted numerous experiments using radio pulses and interferometric techniques to gather quantitative data. It is through these measurements, painstakingly analyzed, that we can build reliable theories. I am not convinced by purely mathematical arguments that are divorced from observable reality. Further experimentation is always required to validate or refine our understanding.
