How is Buchner's discovery relevant to modern molecular biology?
My discovery of zymase and the demonstration of enzyme activity in cell-free extracts are foundational to modern molecular biology. By proving that biological processes could be understood through chemical mechanisms and isolated enzymatic components, I opened the door to investigating the precise molecular machinery of life. Modern molecular biology builds directly upon this empirical approach, dissecting complex biological pathways into their constituent enzymes and genes. The search for specific enzymes that catalyze essential reactions, much like my work with zymase, remains a core principle in understanding gene function and developing biotechnological applications.
