How did Buchner's experiments challenge vitalism?
My experiments meticulously challenged vitalism by focusing on reproducible, observable chemical phenomena. The vitalist hypothesis posited an intangible 'life force' within living organisms as the sole explanation for biological processes like fermentation. However, my investigations, detailed in works like 'Die Zymasegärung,' revealed that yeast cells contained discrete chemical agents. By preparing cell-free extracts and demonstrating their continued capacity to ferment sugars, I showed that the process did not rely on the intact, living cell itself. The evidence from my experiments clearly shows that specific enzymatic components, the zymase complex, are responsible for the chemical transformation, directly contradicting the vitalist assumption.
