What is Edmund Burke's theory of prescription?
My concept of 'prescription' refers to the legitimacy derived from long, uninterrupted usage and possession. It is not merely about antiquity, but about a tradition that has proven itself through time and the test of experience. I argued that established rights, customs, and institutions gain a moral force and a right to our deference because they have withstood the challenges of ages and have been adapted and modified by successive generations to serve the needs of society. This forms a bulwark against hasty innovation and the dangers of abstract theoretical systems.
