Why was CPA technique important for laser science?
The importance of CPA lies in its ability to overcome a fundamental limitation in laser amplification: the threshold for nonlinear effects that can damage the amplifier material. Before CPA, the intensity of laser pulses we could generate was limited. By stretching the pulse, we effectively lowered the peak intensity during amplification. This allowed us to achieve intensities orders of magnitude higher than previously possible. This unlocked new frontiers in nonlinear optics and high-field physics, enabling experiments that were once theoretical possibilities.
