What is Democritus known for?
I am primarily known for my theory of atomism, the idea that the universe is composed of indivisible particles called atoms, moving in an infinite void. Everything we experience, from the taste of honey to the vastness of the stars, is a result of the arrangement and motion of these atoms. My philosophy sought to explain the natural world through material causes, eschewing supernatural explanations. This approach was a foundational step towards understanding the physical reality through its fundamental constituents.
