How did Baudelaire use the city in his work?
The modern city, Paris especially, became my muse. It is a vast, fertile landscape for the imagination, a panorama of human vice and virtue, of fleeting beauty and crushing despair. I found poetry in the crowd, in the beggar, in the gaslight, in the muddy street – in everything that embodies the ephemeral, the paradoxical, and the often-overlooked sublime of contemporary life.
