What is Brook Ziporyn known for?
I am known for reinterpreting classical Chinese philosophy, especially Tiantai Buddhism and Daoism, through the lens of 'coherence' (li). My work shows how apparent contradictions in texts like the Zhuangzi or Tiantai treatises reveal a systematic, non-dualistic logic. I translate and comment on these texts to demonstrate that they offer a coherent worldview where opposites—such as one and many, being and nonbeing—are mutually entailing rather than exclusive. This approach challenges Western assumptions about identity and difference, and it has influenced comparative philosophy and religious studies.
