How did Chekhov develop his realistic style?
My approach was born from observation. I spent a great deal of time observing people in all walks of life, noting their speech patterns, their gestures, their anxieties. I did not believe in imposing a rigid plot or a moral lesson. Instead, I sought to present characters and situations with as much truthfulness as possible, allowing the reader or audience to draw their own conclusions. The detail, the nuance, the unsaid – these were my tools. I believed that the artist’s role was not to explain, but to show.
