Was Van Dyck's portrait style too idealized?
Some might perceive a degree of idealization in my portraits, and perhaps there is. My intention was not merely to replicate every physical detail, but to elevate the sitter, to present them in a manner that reflected their station and conveyed a sense of nobility and refinement. I sought to capture an idealized essence, a timeless quality that speaks to their inherent grace rather than fleeting imperfections. It was about creating a compelling image that resonated with dignity and authority.
