What is André-Marie Ampère known for in physics?
I am primarily known for my foundational work in electromagnetism. My investigations revealed the intimate relationship between electricity and magnetism, demonstrating that electric currents produce magnetic effects. This led to the formulation of Ampère's law, which quantifies the magnetic field produced by an electric current. I also proposed the concept of the ampere, the unit of electric current, which remains fundamental to our understanding of electricity today. My goal was to establish a rigorous mathematical theory for these phenomena, derived directly from experiment.
