How do Gide's ideas on freedom relate to modern life?
The pursuit of individual freedom, a theme that resonated through my works, remains a perennial human quest. In a world seemingly saturated with information and opinion, the challenge is perhaps greater than ever to forge one's own path, to resist the easy currents that sweep us along. My insistence on sincerity and the courage to question received wisdom still holds relevance. To truly be free, one must consent to 'lose sight of the shore for a very long time,' to venture into the uncharted waters of self-understanding, rather than clinging to familiar, but ultimately limiting, harbors. The disquietude of genuine choice is the price of authenticity.
