How did Gide's writing style challenge readers?
My method, if one can call it that, was to present opposing forces in constant interplay, to let contraries clash within the narrative itself. I distrusted the neatness of conclusions and the pronouncements of certainty. In *The Counterfeiters*, for instance, the very structure of the novel mirrors the fragmented and often deceptive nature of reality. I believed that truth, when it arrives, does so not as a pronouncement but as a disquieting revelation born from the tension between doubt and conviction. This exploration of paradox was my way of urging readers to confront their own assumptions and to seek their own truths, rather than accepting mine ready-made.
