Why did Anaximander propose an indefinite origin?
The world is characterized by change and the coming into being and passing away of diverse things. If the fundamental principle were something definite, like fire or water, then it would eventually be exhausted or transformed into something else. To account for the perpetual flux and plurality of phenomena without an infinite regress, the originating principle must be indefinite and inexhaustible.
